Years off your appearance in no time

Before and after photos of wrinkles around the mouth treated with Juvederm Ultra.
Before and after photos of a 48-year-old patient who had Botox and Juvederm Ultra treatments.
So, let's say you've got a class reunion or other special event to go to and you're looking for something that will dramatically improve your appearance and fast. What do you do?

Well, after a free consultation, one of our 48-year-old patients decided on a combination of Botox® Cosmetic to get rid of the horizontal lines across her forehead, and Juvederm® Ultra to fill in the lines around her mouth. As you can see, the results are dramatic. The photos almost look like they are of a mother and daughter instead of the same person.

Botox and Juvederm treatments can easily be combined in a single visit. There may be a little redness or swelling at the Juvederm sites immediately afterwards for a couple of days, but nothing that can't be covered up with a little make-up. The results of the Juvederm are immediate, and the Botox takes complete effect within a couple of days. To be super safe, book your appointment a week or two before your special event.

Book your free consultation today by calling (509) 735-1100, ext. 114, to see what we can do for you!

And check out our new lower prices:

Botox® Cosmetic: $13 $9 unit
Juvederm® Ultra: $535 $425 per syringe
Juvederm® Ultra Plus: $585 $450 per syringe

New treatments for the New Year

We've had a lot of changes around here lately. Last month we introduced PCA Skin® peels to our skin treatment center. We hired a new employee to do Botox® and dermal filler injections. And we radically lowered our prices indefinitely on Botox® Cosmetic (now only $9 a unit) and Juvéderm® Ultra (now only $425 a syringe for Ultra and $450 for Ultra Plus).

Now, we're looking forward to getting two new machines that will give us even more ways to rejuvenate aging skin.

Ulthera™ System

The Ulthera™ System was just approved by the FDA for noninvasive eyebrow lifts. It can also be used on the lower face and neck. (See before and after pictures above.) This new device uses ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production deep below the skin’s surface without harming the outer epidermis. This means great results with zero downtime.

Fraxel re:pair®

We’ll also be adding Fraxel re:pair® to our line-up of treatments soon. (We already have the Fraxel re:store®.) The Fraxel re:pair® laser is the only fractional CO2 laser on the market that delivers the results of conventional bulk ablative lasers—without the prolonged downtime, risks or complications. This laser gets rave reviews for its ability to firm skin and reduce fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.

Oh, and did I mention we also have gift cards available now?

Happy Holidays!

Starting Dec. 1, 2009, we are cutting our prices from $13 to only $9 per unit for Botox® Cosmetic, and from $535 per syringe of Juvéderm® Ultra to only $425 for the first syringe of Juvéderm®, and half that price for additional syringes.

We have no plans to change these prices anytime soon, but you might want to call (509) 735-1100 and make your appointment now before we come to our senses!

Coming soon: PCA SKIN® professional chemical peels and daily care products

Starting approximately mid-November, we will be introducing a new line of skin care products by PCA SKIN® and using their products for medical grade chemical peel cosmetic treatments.

Since 1990, PCA SKIN has partnered with renowned physicians and scientists to help create innovative formulations that are available exclusively through doctors and licensed skin care professionals. PCA SKIN was the first to provide scientifically researched daily care products and professional treatments that are both gentle and effective to the medical and clinical aesthetics markets.

Progressive, not aggressive, peels

PCA SKIN professional treatments are scientifically formulated to gently stimulate, firm and tighten skin. Advanced ingredients are carefully blended and work synergistically to remove dull, damaged surface layers without the downtime often associated with chemical peels. The purpose of peels is not only to exfoliate but more importantly to increase the penetration and absorption of the active ingredients in both the professional treatments and daily care products to target and treat troublesome skin conditions at the cellular level.

Skin conditions addressed by peels include:
  • Hyperpigmentation/sun damage
  • acne
  • chronic dryness
  • sensitive skin
  • rosacea
  • aging skin
Here's an example of an acne patient treated with both a peel and daily care products:

Should you get treatment for your acne scars?

This is a personal decision that only you can make. Some people feel that acne scars diminish their quality of life. Others can see the same type of scarring as not so bad.

Dermatologists generally recommend making an appointment to talk about treatment if you experience any of the following:
  • You frequently wish that you could just get rid of your acne scars
  • You feel that the scars limit your opportunities to date, to get a job or a promotion, or to do well at school
  • You feel more depressed or less self-confident than before you had acne and acne scarring
  • You get together with people less often because you feel so self-conscious about the scars

In deciding whether to treat acne scars, it is important to know a few facts about scar treatment. Probably the most important fact is that medical insurance generally does not cover treatment for acne scarring. You will have to pay for the treatment. Be sure to get an estimate for the total cost before starting treatment.

You also should know that scar treatment may require several treatment sessions and some downtime.

Having realistic expectations about the results also is important. While treatment can improve the appearance of your skin, restoring it to the way it looked before you had acne scarring may not be possible. A dermatologist can tell you what you can expect.

For best results, if you still have acne, your dermatologist will probably want to get it under control before addressing your scars. And if you don't have scars, but do have acne, the sooner you get it treated and under control, the less likely you'll be to develop scars.

For more information about treatments dermatologist use for treating acne scars, go to the following American Academy of Dermatology links:
And call us at (509) 735-1100 to make an appointment to discuss your options if you'd like to treat your acne scars. If you have severe scarring you probably want to make your appointment with one of our medical providers. If your acne scarring is less severe, one of our licensed estheticians or laser technicians can give you a free Visia consultation and let you know about the skincare products, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and/or Fraxel laser treatments that can improve your scarring.

Don't neglect your neck

Necks can often give away a person's age easier than their faces. Part of this is because the skin on your neck is thinner than everywhere else on your body and has fewer oil glands. Some of it is just that we take better care of our faces until we notice that time has taken its toll on our necks.

"Most of us don't think about our neck until, well, let's say...a little later," says Dawn Risk, a licensed esthetician at the Center for Excellence in Dermatology.

However, it's never too late to start pampering your neck. We carry the complete line of Dermalogica® products. Of those, Dawn suggests a few for taking care of your neck:
  • daily microfoliant® ($50): There's a reason this is Dermalogica®'s most popular product. Use this exfoliant after cleansing and before toning to instantly leave skin noticeably smoother and brighter.
  • super rich repair ($75): Use this super-concentrated, heavyweight moisturizer at night. An active soy isoflavonoid helps stimulate collagen and Hyaluronic Acid production.
  • extra rich faceblock spf30 ($48): Use this moisturizer/sunblock combination to protect your neck from sun-induced wrinkles and brown spots.
If you usually use a lighter moisturizer, Risk says, "Heavier moisturizer on the neck is usually tolerated well except for acneic or very oily skin types."

If you'd like to learn more about Dermalogica®'s products, call (509) 735-1100 today to book an Introductory Facial ($80). This hour-long treatment and lesson are perfect for anyone wanting a change in their skin or home skincare regimen. It includes a free 30-day supply of Dermalogica® products that are right for your skin.

If the right skincare products alone aren't enough to cure your neck problems, call (509) 735-1100 today to schedule a free consultation with one of our laser technicians. They will be able to tell you if one of our laser packages can help reverse the premature aging of your neck.

*Prices subject to change without notice.

Treating acne with light

There's an interesting clinical study that came out recently in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology that examined the effects of three different phototherapies on moderate to severe acne. The effects of of pulsed dye laser (PDL), intense pulsed light (IPL) and blue-red combination light-emitting diode (LED) treatments were reported in the "Phototherapy in the treatment of acne vulgaris" article. Here are some highlights from the paper:

  • One advantage phototherapies have over standard topical and oral acne treatments is that patients don't have to do anything in between treatments, like remembering to take their pills or apply their lotions.
  • PDL took fewer treatments to work. It took an average of 4 PDL, 6 IPL or10 LED treatments to clear up the faces of the test subjects. (They counted a person's face as clear if they had 90% fewer zits than when they started.)
  • After one month of treatments, PDL had cleared the most zits at 73.75% reduction compared to 41.68% for IPL and 35.64% for LED. (PDL and IPL treatments were given once a week and LED treatments were give twice a week. So on average those gettting PDL treatments had clear faces in 4 weeks, LED in 5 weeks and IPL in 6 weeks of treatments.)
  • All phototherapies tested in the study were easy to deliver, well tolerated, pain-free and side-effect free and gave a satisfyingly high clearance rate in patients with inflammatory acne.
So, PDL looks like the choice if speed and the fewest number of treatments are essential. The LED treatments take the most treatments but are also the most economical. (At our office we have two blue light machines, ClearLight® and BLU-U® which are similar in treatment effects to the red-blue LED light that was in the study. Twenty-minute acne treatments with these cost only $25 each.)

If topical or oral treatments aren't working for you, you have options. And we have those options available here. Call 509-735-1100 today to schedule your PDL, IPL or blue light treatment today.

For more information about using laser and light treatments for acne, take a look at this article from the American Academy of Dermatology.

First Person: Botox

Well, they say a picture's worth a thousand words. And the before and after photos from my Botox treatment below certainly say a lot. (By the way, try to ignore the red dots on the before photos. We forgot to take pictures until after the marks indicating where the injections were to go were made.)

I was skeptical about the results before getting Botox. I knew that people got Botox to get rid of the vertical lines between their eyebrows. And I did have the so-called "11s" if I was frowning, but not all the time. What really convinced me to get it done was that some people who get tension headaches stop getting them after Botox. And sure enough the headaches I use to get from frowning or squinting too much are now gone. I'm going through much less Advil now which is a good thing.

I also let Stacey Lemire, the physician's assistant in charge of injecting Botox at our office, talk me into getting Botox to relax the horizontal lines across my forehead whenever I raise my eyebrows, and the crow's feet I get when I smile. In fact, if she had to only pick one area, she said the crow's feet was the one for me. Looking at the results, I'm hooked. The fact that even when my face is at rest that some of the lines under my eyes are gone is great.

The fact that I almost instantly looked less wrinkled is what will keep me coming back for more.

Check out more information about cosmetic Botox here. And give us a call at 509-735-1100 to schedule your Botox appointment.

Before & After

Frown
Notice that even when I'm trying, I can no longer create the vertical lines between my brows:

Surprise
There's no more horizontal forehead furrows:

Smile
Not only are most of the crow's feet gone when I smile, but my eyes look less squinty and more open too:

Relax
Even when I'm not making any faces at the camera, you can tell that the lines under my eyes are diminished:

Rx for longer lashes

Chances are you haven't heard of hypotrichosis of eyelashes. You may even have it and not know it: It's the medical term for "insufficient" eyelashes, in other words, short, sparse or thin eyelashes. And there's now a prescription to treat it.

The Food and Drug Administration approved a cosmetic treatment that makes eyelashes grow longer, thicker and darker last December. The treatment's active ingredient, bimatoprost, was originally approved as a drug to lower intraocular pressure in people with a type of glaucoma or hypertension within the eye. The effects of bimatoprost on eyelashes was first observed when studying those taking it for its original use.

Allergan Inc., the drug manufacturer, is marketing bimatoprost for growing eyelashes under the brand name Latisse. Find out more about Latisse on our website.
